Google has redesigned its iconic Search box with artificial intelligence in the biggest overhaul to its search engine in more than 25 years, as the company pushes deeper into AI-powered search, shopping and automated online tasks.
Announced at Google I/O, the revamped Search interface allows users to ask longer and more complex questions using text, images, files, videos and even Chrome tabs. The AI-powered search box dynamically expands as users type and can suggest questions that go beyond traditional autocomplete.
The redesign comes as Google faces mounting competition from generative AI chatbots that threaten traditional keyword-based search. Google said its conversational AI Mode now has more than 1 billion monthly users, with queries doubling every quarter since launch. The company is also upgrading AI Mode globally with Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default model.
Google is also introducing “Search agents,” AI assistants that continuously monitor the web for information and updates tailored to users’ interests. The agents can track apartment listings, product launches and sports news, then send synthesized alerts when conditions are met.
Shopping was a major focus of the announcements. Google said people shop across its platforms more than 1 billion times daily using its Shopping Graph, a catalog of more than 60 billion product listings. The company unveiled a new “Universal Cart,” an AI-powered shopping cart that works across Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail.
The cart can automatically track price drops, monitor inventory, surface loyalty rewards and even detect compatibility issues between products, such as parts for a custom-built PC. Users will also be able to check out through Google Pay or transfer purchases directly to merchant websites including retailers such as Nike, Target, Walmart and Shopify merchants.
Google said Universal Cart will roll out in the U.S. this summer across Search and the Gemini app. The AI-powered Search box is being launched now in countries and languages where AI mode is available.
