Amazon reportedly is in talks to acquire Globalstar in a potential deal that would strengthen its push into low-Earth orbit satellite services and intensify competition with SpaceX’s Starlink, according to the Financial Times.
Discussions are ongoing and no agreement has been finalized, with talks potentially shifting or collapsing. A key complication is Apple’s 20% stake in the satellite telecommunications company, which requires parallel negotiations. Apple invested $1.5 billion in 2024 and secured access to 85% of Globalstar’s network for satellite-based iPhone messaging.
Globalstar, founded in 1991, has a market value of about $9 billion, with shares up roughly 230% over the past year amid takeover interest.
The deal would support Amazon’s Project Kuiper, now called Leo, which has more than 180 satellites in orbit but trails Starlink’s constellation of over 10,000. Amazon has cited launch capacity shortages as a constraint on its rollout.
