AMD to Invest Up to $5 Billion in Anthropic, a New Client

AMD announced that it will invest as much as $5 billion in Anthropic under a partnership that also calls for the AI company to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s next-generation Instinct accelerators.

Anthropic plans to begin deploying the first gigawatt of AMD Helios rack-scale systems during the first half of 2027. The companies will also collaborate on optimizing Claude workloads for AMD chips and improving AMD’s ROCm software, while AMD plans to use Claude across its engineering and product-development teams.

AMD said its investment in Anthropic will be in the future, but didn’t supply a timeline.

The agreement gives Anthropic another major source of computing capacity alongside its existing relationships with Amazon and Google. It also provides AMD with a high-profile customer as it tries to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in AI infrastructure.

It’s a circular relationship: AMD is investing in a startup that is simultaneously committing to buy large quantities of AMD equipment. It remains to be seen whether Anthropic’s demand translates into sustained chip revenue for AMD.
