ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude: Who’s Winning the Race for AI Traffic

Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude posted triple-digit growth in web traffic and mobile usage in June while ChatGPT’s web traffic leveled off, according to a new BofA Global Research report.

Global daily average web visits to Gemini rose 341% year-over-year, while Claude surged 736%, based on Similarweb data cited by BofA. By comparison, ChatGPT’s web traffic was flat at an average of 179 million daily visits, although it remained substantially larger than either rival. (Web visits exclude traffic from apps.)

On mobile, ChatGPT also retained its lead with 441 million daily active users, up 51% from a year earlier, while Gemini’s mobile audience grew 295% to 118 million users and Claude’s soared 1,206% to 18 million, according to Sensor Tower.

Not every AI platform gained momentum. Perplexity’s global web traffic fell 11% from a year earlier and 14% from May, while Meta AI’s web traffic declined 5% month over month despite remaining up 98% year over year. Grok’s web traffic rose 34% year over year but fell 10% from May.

Despite the rapid gains by some AI chatbots, Google Search showed little evidence of losing users. The search giant’s web traffic increased 4% year over year to 2.8 billion global daily average visits, and its global search market share rose to 91.3%, according to Statcounter.

BofA analyst Justin Post wrote that Google’s steady traffic and expanding AI features suggest the company is entering what he described as an “expansionary” phase for search, with opportunities to increase usage, advertising and monetization through new AI-powered search capabilities.

Post reiterated his ‘Buy’ rating on Alphabet.
