The Walt Disney Co. and OpenAI have reached a 3-year agreement making Disney the first major content licensing partner for Sora, OpenAI’s short-form generative AI video platform.
Under the deal, Sora and ChatGPT Images will be able to generate user-prompted videos and images using more than 200 animated, masked and creature characters, environments, props and vehicles from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. The agreement excludes talent likenesses and voices.
Disney will also become a major OpenAI customer, using its APIs to build new products and experiences, including for Disney+, and deploying ChatGPT internally for employees. As part of the transaction, Disney will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and receive warrants for additional equity.
The companies said they share a commitment to responsible AI use, creator protections and user safety. Curated Sora-generated videos are expected to appear on Disney+ starting in early 2026, pending final approvals and closing conditions.
The value of the deal was not disclosed.
