Google has postponed the release of Gemini 3.5 Pro because the model has not met internal performance goals, particularly for coding, according to Bloomberg News.
The flagship model is reportedly months behind schedule. Coding has become an important competitive benchmark as developers increasingly use models to generate software, operate coding agents and automate technical workflows.
Google engineers, AI researchers and managers were reportedly frustrated by the delay since the company risks losing a market edge as rivals Anthropic and OpenAI have models that are more capable.
“We’re shipping quickly across a wide range of models while keeping them highly cost-effective for customers,” a Google spokesperson told Bloomberg News.
Google wants to move faster in offering AI coding tools, but it is hampered by competing factions within the company: Google Cloud, Google DeepMind and Android are all building AI coding tools.
