Google is rolling out ‘Gems’ – customizable AI personas that can assist users of its most powerful large language model, Gemini Advanced.
Users just have to describe the type of AI assistant they want and Gemini Advanced will create it for them. For example, they can create a writing buddy called Cliffhanger Curator that helps them come up with plot twists.
Specifying the persona in a prompt works too, but with Gems, users can store sometimes detailed profiles of these personas, making for faster and easier access.
Users can come up with many personas, including Sous Chef, Calculus Tutor, and others. Gems will be available to users of its premium Gemini Advanced chatbot, as well as business and enterprise users, in more than 150 countries and in most languages.
Google has created the following pre-made Gems for people to use:
- Learning coach makes complex topics easier to understand.
- Brainstormer provides ideas such as coming up with a perfect 60th birthday gift.
- Career guide helps users achieve their career goals with detailed plans to refine their skills.
- Writing editor provides clear, constructive feedback on your writing.
- Coding partner levels up your coding skills and can help you build projects and learn as you go.
Image generation of people is back
Google is bringing back image generation of people, following social media backlash after it generated images of ethnic minorities holding historically Caucasian roles, such as America’s founding fathers.
Early access will be given to Gemini Advanced, business and enterprise users, starting in English. Google said it does not support generation of “photorealistic, identifiable individuals, depictions of minors or excessively gory, violent or sexual scenes.”
Imagen 3 comes with these and other safeguards. It also watermarks AI-generated images so people can identify which photos come from AI.
