Google is overhauling Google Maps by embedding generative AI, introducing a conversational feature called “Ask Maps” and a redesigned navigation system powered by its Gemini models.
“Ask Maps” allows users to ask natural-language questions about places and get tailored recommendations on a map. Instead of searching through reviews, users can ask questions such as where to charge a phone without waiting in line at a café or where to find a lit public tennis court at night.

The system analyzes information from more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors to generate personalized suggestions and travel itineraries.
Google is also rolling out “Immersive Navigation,” the biggest update to Maps’ driving experience in more than a decade. The feature adds vivid 3D visuals, clearer lane and traffic guidance, smarter route previews and more natural voice directions.
“Ask Maps” is rolling out now in the U.S. and India on mobile, and heading to desktops soon. “Immersive Navigation” is launching across the U.S. and expanding to mobile devices and in-vehicle systems in coming months.
