Shares of Nvidia fell sharply today after a news outlet reported that Meta is considering using AI chips made by Google.
Meta is looking at using Google’s tensor processing units, or TPUs, in its data centers in 2027, according to CNBC, citing news from The Information. Meta may also rent TPUs from Google Cloud in 2026.
Google has designed TPUs since 2018 but for internal use at its cloud computing business. Since then, Google has put out more advanced versions of its AI chip.
Nvidia’s GPUs currently dominate the AI chip market, with a reported 90% share. It recently became the first company to hit a $5 trillion market cap as the most valuable company in the world.
Shares of Nvidia fell 4% in recent trading while Google shares were up 1.3%.
