OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT for Excel, which embeds the chatbot into the Microsoft spreadsheet program to help users build financial models and analyze spreadsheet data using natural language.
The tool, powered by the company’s new GPT-5.4 Thinking model, enables analysts and finance teams to generate or update spreadsheet models, trace formulas and explain changes across workbooks while keeping calculations inside Excel. OpenAI said the feature aims to reduce manual spreadsheet work and improve consistency across teams.
The company also unveiled new financial data integrations in ChatGPT, including connections to sources such as Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, S&P Global, Moody’s, MSCI and FactSet, allowing users to pull market and company data directly into AI-driven research and analysis.
OpenAI said GPT-5.4 improved the performance on its internal investment banking benchmark to 87.3% from GPT-5’s 43.7%, reflecting stronger capabilities in financial modeling and data analysis. The feature is rolling out to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Pro and Plus users in the U.S., Canada and Australia.
Integration with Google Sheets is coming soon.
