OpenAI Mulls Suing Apple Over Lackluster ChatGPT Rollout

OpenAI is considering legal action against Apple over what it sees as a disappointing rollout of ChatGPT integration within Siri and Apple’s broader AI ecosystem, according to Reuters.

The partnership, announced in 2024 as part of Apple Intelligence, allowed Siri to route more complex queries to ChatGPT. OpenAI reportedly expected the deal to drive new subscriptions and deeper integration across Apple apps.

Instead, the company has become frustrated that ChatGPT features are difficult for users to find and have not been prominently promoted inside Siri, according to Reuters’ sources.

OpenAI lawyers are now exploring options that could include sending Apple a formal breach-of-contract notice, though no lawsuit has been filed.

The dispute comes as Apple expands ties with rival AI providers, including Google Gemini and Anthropic, while struggling to deliver promised Siri upgrades on schedule. Apple recently agreed to a $250 million settlement tied to delayed AI-powered Siri features.
