OpenAI Rival Cohere Inks LLM Partnership with Fujitsu

Key takeaways:

  • Cohere and Fujitsu are partnering to develop cutting-edge large language models, particularly focusing on the Japanese market.
  • Fujitsu is also making a “significant” investment in Cohere. The amount was not disclosed.
  • They are developing an advanced Japanese language AI model tentatively named Takane, designed for sectors that require high security, such as finance and government.

OpenAI rival Cohere is partnering with Japanese tech giant Fujitsu to develop advanced large language models proficient in Japanese for use by enterprises.

The collaboration includes a “significant” but undisclosed investment from Fujitsu, according to the two companies. The two will jointly develop an AI model tentatively called Takane, based on Cohere’s latest LLM, Command R+.

Slated for release in September through Fujitsu’s Kozuchi platform, Takane is designed to cater to enterprises requiring high security, such as financial institutions and government agencies. The model will be offered for private cloud environments, ensuring data protection while delivering state-of-the-art AI services.

“Combining our knowledge graph extended RAG technology and generative AI amalgamation technology with Cohere’s secure enterprise LLMs, we aim to provide businesses with powerful and adaptable AI solutions,” said Vivek Mahajan, Fujitsu’s CTO and CPO, in a statement.

Cohere’s co-founder and CEO, Aidan Gomez, highlighted the strategic importance of the Japanese market. “This partnership with Fujitsu is a crucial step in offering world-class LLM capabilities to one of the most important enterprise markets globally.”

The collaboration also integrates Cohere’s advanced enterprise search applications and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology into Fujitsu’s offerings. Additionally, Fujitsu will become the exclusive global provider of jointly developed services, leveraging its Data Intelligence PaaS and Fujitsu Uvance, a cross-industry business model for addressing societal issues such as sustainability.

As part of its AI roadmap, Fujitsu plans to release its knowledge graph extended RAG technology this month, followed by generative AI auditing technology in September. These innovations, coupled with Cohere’s expertise, are expected to accelerate digital transformation across global markets and promote wider AI adoption among enterprises.

This strategic alliance underscores the growing importance of AI in the enterprise sector and highlights the race to lead in the rapidly evolving field of language models and generative AI.
