Wipro CTO: AI Added Capacity Equal to 20,000 Workers

Wipro says its AI initiatives have added capacity equivalent to the output of 20,000 employees, offering one of the clearest public estimates yet of how AI is changing work inside a major technology-services company.

The workers have been redeployed within the company rather than eliminated, CTO Sandhya Arun told Reuters. Wipro employed about 243,000 people in June, making the claimed productivity gain equivalent to roughly 8% of its workforce.

Wipro is moving toward what Arun called a “human-AI operating model.” More than 100,000 employees have received advanced AI training and certifications, and engineers may supervise groups of agents, move to other projects or train for different roles.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean person-to-person replacement by an agent,” Arun said. She did not provide a methodology for calculating the 20,000-worker figure, and the estimate has not been independently verified.

The shift is unfolding across India’s $315 billion software-services industry. Tata Consultancy Services has said AI will slow hiring as it works toward a workforce with equal numbers of employees and AI agents. TCS plans to build a team of as many as 8,900 forward-deployed engineers, while Infosys is targeting about 6,000 over several years. Wipro is expanding a similar group but has not disclosed a target.

Wipro’s productivity claim has not yet translated into a disclosed AI revenue figure. The company is the only one of India’s four largest IT services providers that does not report AI revenue, Reuters said.

Nord-IQ Research analyst Manoj Chandra Jha said Wipro remains in an earlier, cost-absorbing phase of AI commercialization than its peers.
